The Life and Legacy of Mahasannyasini Sri Sri Samhita Devi

Popularly Known As ‘SRI SRI MAMONI’

Mahasannyasini Sri Sri Samhita Devi, officially known as Mangalmayee Bandyopadhyay and affectionately known as Sri Sri Mamoni, was the remarkably divine personality who dedicated Her life to the greatest cause of serving humanity. Born to the most respected Hrishikesh Bandyopadhyay and the most revered Smt. Urmila Devi, she was the only child of a devout family selflessly devoted to the lotus-feet of Sri Sri Babamoni.

A Life of Renunciation and Service
When Samhita Devi was just one year old, her mother had passed away and her father, a wealthy diamond merchant, renounced the materialistic world to seek spiritual enlightenment. Before leaving, he entrusted his daughter and all of his wealth at the care of Sri Sri Babamoni. Sri Sri Babamoni accepted the responsibility and raised Samhita Devi at His Ashrama.

Education and Spiritual Growth
Samhita Devi excelled in her studies completing her Matriculation from Varanasi and later earning Her Bachelor's from Calcutta University. She completed Her Master’s from Jadavpur University and Banaras Hindu University respectively. As She grew older, Sri Sri Babamoni revealed to Her the story of her parents and offered to return the wealth that had been entrusted to Him. However, Samhita Devi refused to accept that vehemently dedicating Herself solely to Her Guru and His Noblest Mission.

A Divine Incident
Sri Sri Babamoni once shared an incident that showcased Samhita Devi's extraordinary nature. When She was just one and a half years old, She was in His arms at a construction site. As they walked through a particular direction, She began crying and stopped when Sri Sri Babamoni moved away from that particular spot. This kept happening repeatedly until Sri Sri Babamoni looked up to see a massive stone about to fall from the roof. He quickly moved away and the stone fell crashing to the ground. Sri Sri Babamoni declared Samhita Devi as “Nitya Shuddha (eternally pure)” and added that She had been saving His life since infancy.

Leadership and Legacy
Sri Sri Babamoni publicly declared and announced Samhita Devi in a congregational assembly held at Pupunki on 27th October, 1970 (Kartik 10, 1377 B.S.) as His sole spiritual successor [Avishek Utsav]. After Sri Sri Babamoni's passing away in 1984, Sri Sri Mamoni took over the charge of the Akhanda Sangathan. She was known for her kindness, fathomless knowledge, soft-spoken nature and motherly forgiveness. Her leadership and selfless service inspired countless devotees. Sadly, Her life was cut short in a tragic incident at the Ayachak Ashrama, Gurudham, Kolkata on April 16, 2008.

An Enduring Legacy
Though Sri Sri Mamoni is no longer with us physically, Her spirit and teachings continue to inspire and guide her devotees. Her life is a testament to the power of dedication, compassion, and selflessness.
